BBC News Online reports that the name of Liverpool Hope University, UK, was used in an internet scam targeting students in Nigeria.
Students in Nigeria were sent fake degree offer letters, supposedly from Liverpool Hope University, with a request from an equally fake educational/scholarship agency (based in Nigeria) for a non-refundable acceptance fee. Liverpool Hope University was alerted to the scam when the prospective students contacted them asking for more details about placement. The students had been sent an official looking letter that "appeared to have an official university letterhead and to have been signed by actual members of university staff" but had a particularly dubious quality of written English.
Liverpool Hope University has provided the students with help to navigate their official channels of application.
