Helping a stranger (act of kindness)

Submitted by Laura from Adelaide, Australia
One year me and my family were in Sydney. Me and my older sister (who were only young at the time) had been at a dance competition. My mother Jayne and eldest sister Elannah, were at the train station. Ellanah went running up to my mother and starting saying "Mum! Mum! You have to come help!" My mum looked at my sister like 'what are you on about' and said "We can't! We're going to miss our train!" But my sister insister saying "MUM! You have to come help now!" My mum was thinking to herself by this time 'Oh for God's sake what has she done! Oh well we're just gonna have to miss our train' as she followed my sister (while carrying all our travel bags and luggage) all around the train station. Ellanah walked up to a girl and said "My mum's here! She can help!" The girl had down syndrome and the train station had closed to platform where she usually catches her train due to a fire. The girl didn't know what to do and was clearly distressed. My mum at that point knew she had to help the girl and they were going to miss the train now whether she had helped or not. She took the girl around to the other platform and saw her off. While they were walking however, the girl thanked my mother and sister for their kindness stating that she had been standing there for half an hour and no one had even looked at her. As the train left the girl waved and smiled to my mother and sister. I know it might not have been much, they didn't spend money or anything like that, but they did help that girl get home when (I'm sure someone might've done it) she might not have been able to. Even though it's not much my mother and sister missed their train so that a complete stranger would get on theirs. Their small act of kindness makes me smile too and I know that I would do the same no matter what happened for me and I hope others would too. Even if it means getting home a little bit later
