On
Friday, 22-year-old Angelikque Sutton was supposed to marry Patrick
Bradley, the father of the child she had carried inside her for nearly
nine months. Instead, she was gruesomely murdered by a friend who cut
her baby out of her womb and pretended the child was hers.
“It’s my baby!” is what Ashleigh Wade, also 22, reportedly told cops when they arrived at her Bronx apartment and found her sitting on the stoop with bloody hands. The boyfriend whom she called and asked to come over “because she did something really bad,” was cradling Sutton’s baby in his jacket. Inside Wade’s apartment lay the body of her friend which had been stabbed several times in the neck and torso; across her stomach was a deep gash from where Wade cut the baby out of her. In the bathroom, authorities found the placenta and umbilical cord, which Wade cut herself; a bloody knife laid nearby.
Wade initially tried to convince police she’d given birth to the baby herself but eventually confessed that she’d stabbed Sutton “as many times as she could” in self-defense. Wade claimed Sutton tried to attack her with a knife and after wrestling it away from her she then stabbed her friend in the neck and only cut her stomach open to save the baby. Wade was taken into custody at the scene and transferred to Elmhurst Center Hospital in Queens Saturday to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. She has been charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.
According to the New York Times, city councilman Andy King said investigators are considering the case to be a possible “baby snatching.” While police offered no motive, the Facebook pages of Wade and her boyfriend Angel Praylow, 27, do. In a picture of the couple posted in July, Wade referred to herself as Praylow’s “pregnant GF” and he had reportedly been posting pictures of sonograms on his timeline for months. November 16 is the day the couple was said to be expecting a baby girl, but on that date Praylow wrote: “Today her due day but she not ready to come out yet.” Wade also had several online registries, including one at Babies “R” Us. What remains unclear is whether Wade lost the baby or was never pregnant in the first place.

Angela Parris, Wade’s landlord, told The Times
the woman told her she’d gone to the hospital a few weeks ago to be
treated for placenta previa, which is a condition in which a placenta
partially or fully covers the opening in the mother’s cervix. Because
Wade refused to consent to a medical exam, police cannot confirm whether
she is pregnant or ever has been. What is known is this isn’t her first
time claiming to have had complications from a pregnancy. According to
sources that spoke with New York Daily News,
“Wade told her estranged family she ‘had a baby’ that died shortly
after being born in 2014. But when pressed for further details, she
clammed up and wouldn’t say what hospital she had given birth in or
provide any other details.” As one police source put it, “She seems
obsessed with babies.”
Sutton,
who had recently graduated with a criminal justice degree, was living
with two sisters right up the street from Wade who told police she and
her friend went to school together in the fifth grade then lost touch
and only recently rekindled their friendship on Facebook. The two went
to eat together in the days leading up to the murder and even shopped
for baby items at Toys R’ Us, but things apparently took a dark turn
when they started “talking about the past,” Wade told police, according to sources.
After
taking both Sutton and her baby, which was due to be delivered December
2, to the hospital where Sutton later died, authorities matched the DNA
of the baby to slain mother and her boyfriend of eight years, Bradley.
Thankfully little Genesis is in stable condition after the horrific
ordeal her mother went through.
